Lyrically, the songs shift between personal and sociopolitical topics (often painful and explicit dealing with issues of drugs, neglect, emotional/physical/sexual violence, abandonment, poverty, racism/sexism/homophobia, etc), usually delivered poetically rather than straightforward.
